Chapter 43
Rhonda did indeed know a guy. A guy who was planning to build a horse race track just east of Waco, Texas in a location that would make it centrally located to Dallas, Austin, and Houston. Horse betting was legal in Texas, but the long term plan was to be ready to break ground on a casino should a bill approving casino gambling ever get passed. So far the measure had been defeated again and again, even with the deep pockets of the gambling industry greasing every wheel available in the Lone Star State. Even a sneaky bid to allow “destination resort” casinos had fallen short. But their patience was almost as deep as their pockets. It was only a matter of time.
After checking with “the guy,” Jerry and Rhonda and Joanne and Bob met up for the world’s most bizarre double date with RogLee and their Austin-based attorneys. They outlined the initial terms of the deal and Joanne was relieved RogLee wasn’t going to try and play hardball. She later told Mary Louise that he was happy to finally “...get rid of all the tree huggers up in my ass.”
In another interesting twist, Jerry also ended up investing in the race track. Not exactly partners with RogLee, just strange bedfellows. Sometimes karma was a bitch, thought Mary Louise, and sometimes karma went the other way. If Mary Louise had slammed the door in Rhonda’s face, they’d still be fighting the battle.
“Yes!” said Beverly. “We’ll make it a Hill Country pickleball retreat. Dottie and Mary Louise can do the cooking. Joanne can be the hostess and take care of reservations. I’ll take care of the game schedules and other activities. What do you think?”
The other three looked at each other. Were they all just crazy enough to do it?
A wicked grin passed over Beverly’s face. Her eyes grew wide and she said, “We’ll call it The Pickledome!”
